Dato’ Chuah Kooi Yong, FRSA

Equator College was founded in 1987 by Dato’ Chuah Kooi Yong with a clear vision—to create an institution where creativity, innovation, and practical education come together to prepare graduates for the evolving creative industries.

His belief that education should be accessible, industry-relevant, and future-focused has shaped generations of designers, artists, and creative professionals. Today, that vision continues to guide Equator College as we empower students to discover their potential and make meaningful contributions to society.

From a pioneering art academy in Penang to one of Malaysia’s most recognised creative institutions, every milestone reflects our commitment to excellence, innovation, and industry relevance.

2000

Appointed Autodesk Training Centre in the Northern Region, Malaysia.

2002

Moved administrative campus from Anson Road to Leith Street, also housing the Certificate, Fashion Design and Fine art programmes.

2006

Launched Certificate in Art and Design programmes.

2007

Acquired full accreditation from MQA for Diploma in Interior Design ang Diploma in Graphic & Multimedia Design programmes.

2008

Acquired full accreditation from MQA for Certificate in Art & Design programme.

2010

Acquired full accreditation for MQA for Diploma in Fashion Design Technology programme.

2013

Awarded MyQUEST 4 Stars

2014

Renamed as Equator College.

2015

Awarded MyQUEST 5 Stars

2017

Acquired ISO 9001:2015 certification. School of Art, Media & Design Technology, School of Engineering & Built Environment. School of Creative Business took off. Appointed as Autodesk Certification Centre.

2018

Signing of Architecture Degree with University Sains Malaysia (USM).

2019

SinChew Entrepreneur Excellence Award. Awarded MyQUEST 6 Stars.

2022
